Carmel, CA: Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo

Founded on June 3, 1770, by Father Junípero Serra, the Carmel Mission is the second of California's 21 Spanish missions. It served as the headquarters for the Alta California mission system from 1797 to 1833. Father Serra, canonized as a saint in 2015, is buried beneath the sanctuary floor of the mission's basilica.
